As much as the life of a screenwriter-working on a single project for months-may seem saner than the life of a TV writer-working long hours in a crowded writer’s room week after week-Cannon clearly embraces the fierce work ethic she learned on 30 Rock. Though the success of Pitch Perfect 2 may have every studio leaving her voice mails this week, Cannon still plans to return to television, on a project she can’t yet discuss. “You just tell a good story where you’re funny and it makes people laugh,” she says. We‘ll really work at it.’”įor a writer and actress who’s still relatively unknown, Cannon has already had a significant cultural impact, first as one of the writers for 30 Rock who helped define the now-iconic character of Liz Lemon (“I think Liz Lemon’s love of cheese was !”), and then as the writer of the first Pitch Perfect, which led to the enormous viral hit song “Cups.” Her favorite cover of the fiercely beloved song remains one recorded by 12-year-old boys in Dublin, “dancing without any concern that anybody was watching them.” Though the Pitch Perfect films have a reputation for being female-powered-one that will only be strengthened by the sequel’s massive box-office take from a 72 percent female audience-Cannon knows men laugh at her movies too. Says Cannon, “They said, ‘If you put us in the sequel, we will practice, we will rehearse, we’ll take it as a serious thing.
The whole thing started when David Bakhtiari, an offensive lineman for the Packers, tweeted at Banks about his love for the movie, and eventually asked for a cameo in the sequel. “I was like, ‘My dad is rolling over in his grave right now if the Green Bay Packers are in it.’” “My dad passed away while I was writing the sequel,” she explains. “And I was like, ‘No they're not.’” It’s not that Cannon thought burly football players had no role in her girl-power comedy-a Chicago native and a football fan, Cannon was so committed to her hometown Bears she refused to put the spotlight on the hated rival Packers. “The whole time Elizabeth Banks and Max, they were basically saying to me, ‘The Green Bay Packers are going to be in this movie,’” Cannon recalls. And it wouldn’t have happened if writer Kay Cannon had gotten her way.
But one of the film’s best surprises-an appearance by several Green Bay Packers at an underground “riff-off” singing competition-almost didn’t happen.
